Awards

Health Management students and Alumni are eligible for the following program awards. Winners will have their names advertised following presentations.

Student Awards

Equity, Diversity, And Inclusion (Edi) Admission Award: Established in 2022, the award will be given at admission to an equity-seeking applicant (including but not limited to race, culture, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, religion/creed, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, health status, body size, linguistic background, and the intersections of any of these) to the Master of Health Management (MHM) Program.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must have received and accepted an offer of admission to the MHM Program for the academic year the award is being awarded.

HOW TO APPLY: Complete the EDI Admission Application Form and submit it electronically along the following:

  1. A maximum two (2) page, 12-point font letter (with 1-inch margins) that describes the applicant’s experience as a member of an equity seeking group and how the award would help them in terms of their studies in the MHM program. This letter is to be addressed to the MHM ARABO Committee.
  2. Copy of a current CV (no longer than two (2) pages).

METHOD OF SELECTION: The Anti-Racism, Anti-Bias, Anti-Oppression (ARABAO) Committee will review the applications and select a recipient.

PRESENTATION: A $5000 award will be paid to the recipient. If 2 recipients are selected, the award may be split ($2500 each). The award recipient(s) will have the opportunity to have their name announced in a public venue (such as our website, program reports, or social media.)

Founder’s Academic Award: This award will be presented to the graduating student who has consistently demonstrated a high level of scholarly achievement in their health management career.

METHOD OF SELECTION: The MHM graduating student with the highest cumulative average.

PRESENTATION: A framed certificate and gift ($200 value). This award is presented annually to a qualifying student(s) – typically at the Convocation Awards Celebration, hosted by the program. Award recipient(s) will be announced in a public venue (such as our website, program reports, or social media.)

 

Scholarly Paper Prize: This prize will be awarded to the graduating student deemed to have displayed a combination of strategic problem solving skills, critical thinking, and originality with a comprehensive and accurate command of relevant scholarship in the area of health management in their scholarly paper. The paper will often add valuable new information to the literature in this field.

METHOD OF SELECTION: The MHM graduating student with the highest grade in HM/RS/730. The Course Coordinator/Instructor will consider the assessments and grades provided by the Faculty Advisor and the Reader to choose the recipient of the Scholarly Paper Award. When there is uncertainty, the Course Coordinator will seek the input of another faculty member of the MHM Program.

PRESENTATION: A framed certificate and a gift ($100 Value). This award is presented annually to a qualifying student(s) – typically at the Convocation Awards Celebration, hosted by the program. Award recipient(s) will be announced in a public venue (such as our website, program reports, or social media.)

Community Contribution Award: Based on the opinion of the MHM Program, the student who 1) has provided outstanding support, leadership and involvement/service to MHM Students, the MHM Program or to McMaster University during their MHM degree and/or 2) has contributed to fostering change through equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives within the community during their MHM degree will be presented with this award.

NOMINATIONS SHOULD INCLUDE: A total of two letters of support from students, faculty and/or staff that detail the reason for the nomination. If self-nominating then the student should submit a letter outlining their merit for this award and the impact of their actions.

METHOD OF SELECTION: Three members of the McMaster MHM Program community comprise the Selection Committee and choose the award recipient. Nominees will be notified by the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee will consider all information available to them and select the recipient. While this is an annual award there is no commitment by the Selection Committee to make a selection each year. 

PRESENTATION: A framed certificate and a gift ($100 Value). This award is presented annually to a qualifying student(s) – typically at the Convocation Awards Celebration, hosted by the program. Award recipient(s) will be announced in a public venue (such as our website, program reports, or social media.)

Emerging Leader Award: This award recognizes an MHM student’s career endeavors and/or achievements that have made a significant contribution to the area of healthcare management while participating in and applying learnings of the MHM Program. This may be demonstrated through service, research, leadership, innovation or change in career trajectory.

NOMINATIONS SHOULD INCLUDE: A total of two letters of support from student’s workplace, student’s professional association and/or faculty that detail the reason for the nomination. If self-nominating then the student should submit a letter outlining how being in the MHM Program has enabled them to make a difference in these settings.

METHOD OF SELECTION: Three members of the McMaster MHM Program community comprise the Selection Committee and choose the award recipient. Nominees will be notified by the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee will consider all information available to them and select the recipient. While this is an annual award there is no commitment by the Selection Committee to make a selection each year. 

PRESENTATION: A framed certificate and a gift ($100 Value). This award is presented annually to a qualifying student(s) – typically at the Convocation Awards Celebration, hosted by the program. Award recipient(s) will be announced in a public venue (such as our website, program reports, or social media.)

Conference Presentation Award: This award is designed to provide financial support to MHM students’ and alumni’s presentations at scientific/ professional meetings where the information presented is based on MHM course work.

CRITERIA: 

  • presentation must occur within the most recent 12 months or upcoming 6 months;
  • applicant must be in their 2nd, or 3rd year of the MHM program, or be an alumni having graduated within the last two years;
  • major criterion will be the professional/scientific merit of the presentation;
  • research with broad application to health management and that which is inter-disciplinary may be a secondary criteria in assessing applications;
  • the conference may be considered in terms of virtual, national, or international audience;
  • the work being presented need not be peer reviewed;
  • priority is given to applicants who have not previously received a MHM Conference Presentation Award and this award will typically only be awarded to a student once;
  • presenter must acknowledge the MHM program in their presentation with this provided acknowledgement script.

METHOD OF SELECTION: Applications are filed for review twice annually and the following are considered when scoring submission: priority is given to applicants who have not previously received a MHM Conference Presentation Award; no more than two abstracts per applicant will be considered per competition; and whether the award criteria has been met.

HOW TO APPLY: Complete the Conference Presentation Award Application Form and submit it along with a copy of the accepted abstract as it was submitted and your acceptance notification to the program office as outlined below.

Applications may be submitted at any time during the calendar year, with presentation twice annually to the winning submission.

PRESENTATION: $200 for a virtual presentation, $300 for a presentation in Canada, $400 for a presentation outside of Canada. This award is presented directly to the successful recipient twice annually during the Spring and Fall to a qualifying applicant(s). Award recipient(s) will be announced in a public venue (such as our website, program reports, or social media.)

Alumni Awards

This award acknowledges graduates from McMaster University, from the Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech-Language Pathology, Rehabilitation Science (MSc/PhD), and Master of Health Management programs. There will be one award per program each year, and if there are no nominations, no award will be given.

Criteria: The award winner will inspire a passion for personal growth, development, and life-long learning. The award will honour and recognize an alumni who is respected and admired for their leadership, achievements, and contributions in any of the following area(s): Scholarly activity; Education; Clinical Practice; and, Community-at-Large.

Recognition: Recipients will have their name added to the wall plague, located outside of the IAHS, Room 403, along with a trophy/plague. Recipients will be asked to give a short speech at the program’s annual convocation celebrations.

  • The SRS Awards will be presented following the School Council meeting.
